Review of Synology DiskStation DS713+

Conclusion

The Synology DS713+ address some of the flaws found in its predecessor the Synology DS712+ including the lack of USB 3.0 connector. With its dual core Intel Atom D2700 processor and 1 GB DDR3 memory the Synology DS713+ it is the most powerful Synology NAS dual bay server around. If two drives is not enough the ability it to attach five more drives is simple enough with the DX513 expansion unit. Plus you’ll still have two USB 3.0 ports for even more additional storage via external hard drives.

This model is the fastest NAS server that I have come across. The intuitive DSM interface is simple enough for the beginner to use yet powerful and customizable for the advanced user. The installation of software aka packages allows the Synology DS713+ do lots of heavy lifting. The Synology package center offers apps ranging from multimedia control, file management, backup, productivity, security and surveillance. It has the ability to transfer files at lightning fast speeds while performing these other multiple functions.

All this power does come at a price. The diskless version of the Synology DS713+ can be found online in the $500 range while the 5 bay expansion is another $500 plus. This is all before adding hard drives. For the home user the less powerful, less expensive Synology DS213 may be a good alternative. If you require faster transfer speeds and more processing power then the Synology DS713+ is the Synology NAS server you want to get.
