Review of Scosche boomCAN Portable Media Speaker

Hey, Hey, I’m back with another review for you. It’s a little review, or an equally little product from Scosche called the boomCAN. This little product is meant to let you take your music with you, or any audio really. The boomCAN is a tiny little speaker with a big sound that comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that you can charge right over USB. So read on…

The boomCAN comes in a small, nice looking little box.

When you open the box you’ll find the boomCAN, user guide, combination USB and audio cable and a carrying pouch.

boom3 boom4

The boomCAN has the Scosche logo on it and under it is an LED for power and charging.

boom5

The speaker is right on the top and there’s a guard there to protect the driver.

boom6

On the sides of the boomCAN you’ll see a USB cable for audio and charging and then an auxiliary output port so you can hook another boomCAN to it.

boom7

On the bottom you’ll see a sliding switch for off, low and high volumes.

boom8

The boomCAN is made from aluminum making it sturdy and durable yet lightweight.

So I charged the boomCAN, I really didn’t time it as I just plugged it in when I was working at my desk, but it didn’t seem to take long at all. That could be because there was a partial charge on it from the factory. To charge the boomCAN you just connect it to your computers USB port, simple and nothing to it.

I used the boomCAN with my Zune HD, iPod Touch 4th Gen, Samsung Captivate, and even my Android tablet. I found I easily got the rated seven hours of battery life out of it as well.

When I first turned the boomCAN on I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality from such a little speaker, and a single one at that. Yes it’s not exactly stereo sound, but it still sounds very good. The sound is crisp and clear. The boomCAN can also get very loud, but at the max volumes it does get a bit distorted but that happens with most any device of this type.

boom10

I’m impressed with such big sound from a little package honestly.

Conclusion:
The Scosche boomCan is a great little portable speaker, it’s well designed and it really works. The battery life is excellent, and the sound is decent overall. The included carrying pouch comes in handy to not only protect it but to make sure you don’t lose the included cable.

The sounds can get slightly distorted when at higher levels, but that’s to be expected really, it’s like that with most any speaker.

I would have also liked to have seen a separate audio cable, instead of the combination one that comes with the boomCAN. I can understand having the combination cable, but one can wish right?

Pros:
+Very loud
+Small and portable
+Decent battery life
+Can chain together with other boomCANs for better sound
+Comes with carrying pouch

Cons:
-Can get distorted at high volumes

Grades:
Overall score-9-10
Design score-10-10
Performance score-9-10
