Review of Harman Kardon BDS 880 Home Theater System

Conclusion

I needed a system to replace an ageing Blu-Ray sound bar which had started to become problematic loading disks. I also wanted a big jump up in cinema sound experience. At the same time I wanted to be able to deliver all my media including videos, music and photos effortlessly from my WIFI connected NAS, as well as incorporate a good connectivity with my mobile phone. Finally as age is creeping up on me, design and fitting in well with my décor was also a factor as was a quality and trusty brand. I’m not looking to replace this for at least 5 years, maybe 20.

So does the BDS880 meet my needs?

There’s no disputing the fact that Harman Kardon designs beautiful equipment. It really is stunning to look at and oozes quality from every angle – even underneath. The design team should be very proud of themselves on this one. Feature wise, it’s packed. I can’t think of any obvious omission, but it hasn’t become overly complicated either with it’s very well laid out menu system and remote control. Performance wise, I also can’t fault it’s ability to blow my socks off every time I load up a big movie – both sound and picture. When it comes to connectivity it’s got that covered too, although at times things do go wrong and it needs to reset to get things moving again. This can be annoying but it comes with the territory these days. I think if HK can resolve these connectivity issues then it would get a full 10 out of 10 from me, as it stands it comes close with an overall score of 9. Well done HK.
